Little Tunes Together: Connecting Generations Through Music

Updated: Sep 8

In today’s world, children and older adults often live in separate circles. But when they come together, something magical happens, especially through the power of music. At MIYA Creative Care, our Little Tunes Together program brings seniors and children into one joyful space, creating bonds that uplift both generations.

A Note From Our CEO

When I first started MCC 10 years ago, I had two passions: working with older adults and working with children. In the early days, these passions lived in separate spaces — I provided music therapy in long-term care homes and retirement communities while also leading a program I created: Little Tunes, a parent-and-child music program for infants and toddlers across the GTA.

A couple years in, I was given the opportunity to bring these two worlds together, and Little Tunes Together was born. Our very first program ran at the Bernard Betel Centre, where infants, toddlers, parents, grandparents, and older adults from the community came together in one room to sing, move, and share joy. The energy was unforgettable — laughter, music, and generations connecting most naturally.

One moment that has always stayed with me happened years later: a mom recognized me from that very first program and shared how special and unique the intergenerational experience had been for her and her child. I was so touched by the lasting impression it left.

Since then, it has been a true pleasure to bring Little Tunes Together to some of our care partners and to continue creating these joyful bridges between generations.

Why Intergenerational Music Matters

Music is a universal language. It doesn’t matter if you’re three or ninety-three — a melody can spark joy, unlock memories, and invite connection.

  • For Older Adults: Familiar songs bring comfort, reduce feelings of loneliness, and encourage movement and expression.

  • For Children: Music nurtures empathy, social skills, and curiosity while introducing them to traditions and stories from another generation.

  • For Families & Care Partners: Witnessing these musical moments highlights the power of community and creativity in care.

What Research Tells Us About Programs That Connect Generations Through Music

Research has consistently shown that intergenerational programs create meaningful benefits for both older adults and children. When music is added into the mix, the effects are even more powerful.

  • For Older Adults: Studies have found that participating in intergenerational music programs reduces feelings of loneliness, increases social engagement, and can even improve cognitive stimulation and mood. Familiar songs often unlock long-term memories and encourage meaningful connection.

  • For Children: Research highlights that children in these programs develop greater empathy, patience, and respect for older adults. They also build confidence and communication skills through music and play.

  • For Communities: Intergenerational programs foster stronger community ties and reduce age-related stereotypes. They create a sense of shared identity and belonging across generations.

One study published in the Journal of Intergenerational Relationships found that music-based intergenerational programs were particularly effective at sparking positive emotions and building long-term bonds between participants.

At MCC, we’ve seen these findings come to life through Little Tunes Together. Every greeting song, every drum passed between a child and an older adult, and every shared smile adds to the growing body of evidence that music truly has the power to bridge generations.

Our Partnerships in Intergenerational Research

At MCC, we’re not only passionate about delivering intergenerational programs — we’re also proud to support the research that helps strengthen and expand them.

We partner with the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging (RIA) to bring their Harmony Across Generations: Intergenerational Music Therapy Jamboree Project to some of our care partners. This exciting research initiative explores how music can deepen intergenerational bonds and create lasting positive impacts for older adults, children, and their families.

By combining hands-on programming with evidence-based research, we’re helping to build a stronger understanding of how music connects generations and enriches lives.

What Happens in an MCC: Little Tunes Together Session?

Every session is guided by a professional music therapist and designed to make sure everyone leaves with a smile and a song. Activities include:

  • Greeting Song – A familiar, repeated tune that sets the tone and makes everyone feel included.

  • Movement to Music – Simple, playful songs with actions that children and seniors both enjoy.

  • Shared Instrument Play – Passing a drum or instrument between a child and senior to create music together.

  • Shakers & Rhythm Fun – Adding energy, rhythm, and laughter with instruments everyone can play.

  • Parachute Play & Bubbles – Fun, sensory activities that spark delight and teamwork.

  • Closing Song – A gentle musical goodbye that ensures participants leave uplifted and connected.

The Impact

The effects of these sessions go far beyond the music itself. Seniors feel seen, valued, and joyful. Children learn patience, kindness, and respect for older generations. And caregivers see the transformation that happens when music bridges the gap between age groups.

One care partner shared: “It’s the highlight of our week. The music brings out smiles in residents we rarely see, and the children light up with joy knowing they’ve made a new friend.”
