MMT Music Therapist Feature: David Macintosh

Get to know Miya Music Therapy music therapist, David Macintosh!

1. How did you get into the music therapy field?

I was pursuing a bachelor of arts in pop music studies, writing and recording music and playing in bands. I always enjoyed the connection of music between people (bandmates, family, audiences and performers), and through a good friend's mom's suggestion, I checked out music therapy. She was working at an adult day program which assisted individuals living with dementia who worked with music therapists. I looked into music therapy at that point, and began the journey of volunteering with MTAs and studying psychology. This led me to Concordia's Graduate Diploma in music therapy program, and eventually my internships and accreditation. That's the short story of it! Feel free to message me if you have more questions.

2. What do you love most about your work?

I greatly enjoy being able to see people in a "flow state"; they seem to light up emotionally and personally when interacting with the music. Working with a diverse population is fulfilling to me as well, and I love hearing the stories people share.

3. What populations do you work with?

I work with adults with dementia, kids and adults on the Autism Spectrum, individuals living with stroke and Parkinson's, kids with speech development, and clients with Down Syndrome.

4. What do you enjoy about being on the MMT team?

I most enjoy the support of the team, whether bouncing around ideas for client goals and objectives or relaxing during self-care.

5. What is the last song you listened to?

The last song I listened to was "Sweet Dreams are Made of These" by Eurythmics- I was listening to that whole album, it is a throwback!
