MMT Music Therapist Feature: Naomi Beh-Aharon

Get to know Miya Music Therapy team member, Naomi Ben-Aharon!

1. How did you get into the music therapy field?

I have always known that I wanted to work with the public in a helping profession but was unaware of music therapy until I was in high school and was exploring university programs. I was often told that I would never be able to use music in my career without being a performer or teacher and neither of these felt quite "right." When I discovered that music therapy was a career I could peruse, I knew it was the right path for me as I was able to connect with populations that are often marginalized, through the transformative medium of music. My own personal experiences with music also influenced this choice as I participated in choirs throughout my childhood that benefited me emotionally, socially and spiritually.

2. What do you love most about your work?

I love being able to connect with clients and their families. Knowing that I have made a difference in the life of another person is the most fulfilling feeling. Many clients I work with are in a difficult place in their lives so it means a lot to see a smile, have a laugh and share something as meaningful as music.

3. What populations do you work with?

I work with seniors, individuals with various exceptionalities, cancer patients and those in palliative care.

4. What do you enjoy about being on the Miya Music Therapy team?

I love how close and supportive the MMT team is! Our self-care events and team meetings are fun and engaging and my colleagues are clearly passionate about their work. The MMT team is full of great ideas, suggestions and reflections that help me to become a better therapist, friend and person.

5. What is the last song you listened to?

"Pay the Man" by Foster the People
