From Miya Music Therapy to Miya Creative Care

We commemorated our 7th year anniversary this month by officially changing our company name and website from Miya Music Therapy to Miya Creative Care!

This is something we have been working on behind the scenes for many months as a way to better reflect the scope of services we now offer.

The change in name and website truly encompasses the evolution of our organization and the services we provide to our care partners.

How We Got Here:

When I first started this company 7 years ago, I was providing music therapy services to care facilities throughout the Greater Toronto Area as a sole music therapist. In the first couple of years of practice, I knew that I needed to bring music therapists onto my team in order to continue to meet the growing needs of the many individuals who could benefit from this service. I quickly discovered how much I enjoyed leading and supporting an expanding team of therapists. Creating a strong team of skilled clinicians and long-lasting partnerships with health and wellness organizations became an excellent recipe for delivering quality services to care facilities.

From the very start, it has been my purpose and mission to empower and enrich lives with our services. It has been truly incredible to watch as we are able to do this on a larger scale with therapists from various parts of the province servicing partners from long term care homes, disability services, hospices, and mental health organizations.

During the pandemic, our team worked very hard to find solutions to meet the needs of our care facilities and clients who could no longer access our service in the same way. We provided virtual options as well as recorded activities in hopes of helping to reduce isolation and improve mood. While these endeavors were successful, we were of course not able to provide nearly the amount of support to our care facilities as we had previously given in-person.

Throughout this time, I was reminded of how important all of the creative arts therapies can be for improving quality of life. I witnessed and experienced first hand how the world turned to the arts for healing in times of high stress and uncertainty. Having graduated from a Creative Arts Therapies masters degree, I was exposed to modalities in addition to music therapy including art therapy, drama therapy, and dance/movement therapy.

I knew that it would be a natural progression to begin providing these additional services to our care partners.

It is a wonderful feeling to know that we now have more than one service to offer our partners and clients so that they can explore what might be the right fit for them or their community. Some of our care partners opt to stick with one creative arts therapy service while others are offering all of them through MCC!

We want to thank you for your support as our company continues to grow and evolve in order to make an impact.
